Created at the Bedside, Not in a Boardroom: The Story Behind the MOVAO Mini
MOVAO Mini: An In-Bed Leg Press Created by an Experienced Physical Therapist
Real experience inspires meaningful innovation
The best rehabilitation products do not always begin in a conference room. Sometimes, they begin at the bedside—where a clinician sees the same unmet need day after day and decides that patients deserve a better option.
That is the story behind the MOVAO Mini portable in-bed leg press.
The MOVAO Mini was developed by Darin Trees, PT, DPT, a Doctor of Physical Therapy who has spent 30 years working hands-on with patients in the intensive care unit. Throughout his career, Darin repeatedly cared for people facing severe weakness, prolonged bed rest, surgery recovery, poor balance, and limited mobility. Many of these patients needed to begin rebuilding lower-extremity strength before they could safely stand—but the available exercise options often did not meet them where they were.
Darin did not study this challenge from a distance. He experienced it alongside his patients.
Created for a need seen at the bedside
After decades of helping critically ill and medically complex patients, Darin understood an important gap in the rehabilitation process: people who are unable to safely stand still need a practical way to perform progressive lower-extremity exercise.
That firsthand clinical experience helped shape the MOVAO Mini. It was not created simply because an in-bed exercise device sounded like a good product idea. It was developed in response to a real problem Darin encountered while treating real patients.
His goal was straightforward: create an accessible exercise option that could help people begin moving and strengthening their legs from a bed, chair, couch, or wheelchair—at an appropriate level for their abilities and under the guidance of their healthcare team when needed.
The result is a compact, portable leg press designed especially for individuals who may not yet be able to exercise safely in standing.
Why hands-on clinical experience matters
When a rehabilitation product is developed by an experienced physical therapist, its design is informed by more than theory. It reflects years of observing how people move, where they struggle, what makes exercise difficult, and what can help them participate more successfully.
Darin's ICU experience gave him a close understanding of challenges such as:
-
Profound muscle weakness after critical illness or prolonged hospitalization
-
Difficulty standing because of weakness or poor balance
-
Loss of lower-extremity strength during extended bed rest
-
The need to begin mobility and strengthening gradually
-
The importance of progressive resistance during rehabilitation
-
The practical realities patients, caregivers, and clinicians face every day
That perspective is built into the purpose of the MOVAO Mini: helping bridge the gap between bed rest and standing exercise.
Progressive leg strengthening from bed or a seated position
The MOVAO Mini allows users to perform leg press exercise while lying in bed or sitting in a chair, couch, or wheelchair. With up to 66 pounds of progressive resistance, it can be adjusted as strength and tolerance improve.
Its portable design makes it useful for home exercise, physical therapy, rehabilitation, post-surgery recovery, and limited-mobility fitness. For individuals who are unable to safely stand, the MOVAO Mini offers another way to begin participating in purposeful lower-extremity movement.
Every person's medical condition and recovery are different. Users should follow the recommendations of their physician, physical therapist, or other qualified healthcare professional, particularly after surgery or a serious illness or injury.
Created at the bedside. Not in a boardroom.
The MOVAO Mini represents what can happen when clinical experience leads innovation. It was created by a Doctor of Physical Therapy who spent decades listening to patients, treating weakness, and witnessing the difficult transition from immobility toward standing and walking again.
For Darin, this work has never been only about developing a product. It is about giving people a practical way to begin moving sooner, work toward greater strength, and participate more fully in their rehabilitation.
Because when movement is difficult, even the first press matters.
Created at the bedside. Not in a boardroom. Movement is Medicine.
